WebDec 12, 2024 · In the discipline of corpus linguistics, collocation refers to the above-chance co-occurrence of two words (Sinclair 1991 ). The degree of likelihood of two words co-occurring in a corpus within a given span of discourse can be quantified through one of the available measures of collocational strength such as the mutual information (MI) score. WebCollocation refers to words that are found together in language. Collocations can be fixed, where it is difficult to replace one of the words with an alternative, or freer, allowing for more choice of words. Example. 'Utter disaster' is a fixed collocation, as there are few words that can be used instead of 'disaster'.
