The points typ coil takes 12V on the primary and converts it to spark (somewhere around 25000 volts). The CDI coil starts with more voltage (around 300 volts if my measurements are correct) and creates the 25000V from there.

Eldor makes most of the coil packs for modern cars, Beru makes a few for the new mk7 and hitachi also makes some of the oem 1.8t coils. I believe the blue is internal resistance. The red gives me good spark with standard Bosch Distributer. to me a better spark than the blue.
